Higher up the mountain
NM-536 climbs from Sandia Park toward Sandia Crest. Homes along its lower stretches and side roads sit higher and in thicker forest than most of the area, with more snow, more shade and steeper ground. Shaded driveways hold ice longer, and runoff off the mountain is heavier.
What matters most here
- Drainage — swales and culverts so snowmelt and storms don't run down the drive.
- Steep-section paving with a firm base and good compaction. See steep driveways.
- Snow storage and plow-friendly edges.
- Forest debris — needles and duff removed from the driveway footprint.
Shade and ice
Sections that never get sun stay icy. Good cross-slope helps meltwater leave before it refreezes; we'll point out the problem spots at the site walk.

Questions we get
Can you pave up near the ski area road?
We work on private property along NM-536 and its side roads.
Why does part of my drive stay icy?
Shade plus water that doesn't drain off. Better cross-slope and drainage help.
Do you need a permit at NM-536?
Work in the highway right-of-way may need one. We'll check.
