What "percent grade" means

Grade is rise over run. A driveway that climbs 10 feet over 100 feet of length is a 10% grade. Most people feel a drive is "steep" somewhere above 10%, and very steep above about 15%.

How asphalt handles grade

GradeWhat to expect
Up to about 10%Paves normally
About 10–15%Paves well with a firm base and careful compaction
About 15–20%Doable but harder; drainage and traction become critical
Above about 20%Difficult to compact; consider concrete or reworking the layout

These are general guides. Curves, length and what's at the top and bottom all matter.

Rules can apply

Fire access requirements and county rules may limit driveway grade, especially for new construction. If you're building, check with the county and the fire department before the driveway is laid out.

Ways to make a steep drive work

  • Flatter landings at the road and the garage
  • A curve or switchback to spread the climb out
  • Concrete with a broom finish for the steepest pitch
  • Strong drainage so water doesn't run the length of the drive

Questions we get

How do I measure my driveway's grade?

Measure the rise and the length of a section, then divide. We can measure it at the site walk.

Is concrete better on a steep drive?

On very steep pitches it can be easier to place and texture.

Will a steep drive be icy?

Drainage and sun exposure matter most. Sand on icy days helps.
